E85 Fuel Station in Winnipeg
In a joint initiative, the Province of Manitoba's Department of Transportation and Government Services and Natural Resources Canada have teamed up to build Winnipeg's first E85 fuel station. The site is conveniently located at 1550 Dublin Avenue, not far from the Polo Park area and the main Red River College campus.
On February 9, 2006 Ministers Lemieux and Chomiak addressed a memo to their cabinet colleagues encouraging all departments to support this project. Please ensure drivers using an E85 capable fleet vehicle in your department are made aware of this memo (text below).
As well, ensure all your drivers are aware that a card-lock system will only allow E85 capable (flex fuel) vehicles to refuel at this site. If there are any questions about this project feel free to contact Andy Chartrand at (204) 945-5242 or Rosaline Pachal at (204) 945-4102.

Subject:
Manitoba Government's First E85 Station
Manitoba is undertaking another important sustainable transportation project that addresses climate change as part of our Government's green strategic framework -- Green and Growing.
With the construction of the E85 refueling station at 1550 Dublin Street, for the first time provincial fleet vehicles with E85 capabilities will be able to run on E85, a blend of 85% ethanol and gasoline. We view this as another step Manitoba is taking to increase the visibility and viablikity of renewable fuels in Manitoba.
Ethanol is a biodegradable liquid aclohol distilled from plant matter, such as wheat or corn, and is used in vehicles as fuel oxygenate. Ethanol is one of the many forms of clean energy being produced in Manitoba.
We are proud that Manitoba has met its commitments under the Kyoto Accord; we are now looking towards the future. Like other climate change initiatives, biofuels reap sustainable benefits for the natural environment, the rural economy and society in general.
Environmentally, E85 vehicles will reduce tail pipe emissions by up to 70 per cent as well as reducing other pollutants. Economically, ethanol production will strenghthen the lcoal makret for grain and boost the construction industry in rural Manitoba. Socially, ethanol production will create long-term employment in the alternative energy industry; cleaner air for Maintobans to breathe and a more sustainable transportation system operating on renewable energy.
We need the support of our Cabinet colleagues to successfully demonstrate to public sector bodies that E85 is a reliable fuel for their vehicles.
We are asking our Cabinet colleagues to support this important climate change project. We ask that you request drivers of E85 capable fleet vehilces in your department to use the 1550 Dublin fuel station to fill their vehicles when possible. Further information will be directly provided to program staff in your departments.
Thank you for your support in launching our first E85 refueling station. With participation from all provincial departments, together we will contribute to Growing Manitoba's Green Fleet.
